about contact the don't sleep list random archive rss ripper roo - why adam rooney’s move from aberdeen to salford means nothing “adam rooney’s tier dropping transfer from aberdeen to salford is a symbol of scottish football’s decline” “is this a new low for scottish football?” “gary neville involved in twitter spat over signing of irish striker” adam rooney’s move from aberdeen to salford has earned plenty of headlines that have erred towards shock value in an attempt to garner hate clicks yet every single one has missed the point. but a truthful headline wouldn’t get such attention: “aberdeen squad player departs for non-league” isn’t a good headline and even then doesn’t quite cover it. “rooney departs dons for non-league payday” would perhaps be more accurate because it accepts that rooney has moved for money. on a reported £4k (some have had it down at £6k) a week at salford is a madness of a wage from aberdeen’s perspective. were you at pittodrie, how would you justify paying a 30 year old (so a player on the cusp of decline) who made half his appearances last season from the bench who played under 100 minutes total in aberdeen’s last ten league games of the season. when salford came in offering money for him and offering rooney that amount per week, i’m fairly sure that derek mcinnes would have packed his bags for him. and that is why this isn’t symptomatic of anything in scottish football. rooney gave aberdeen his best years, had been replaced at the club up front by may and cosgrove and had seen his goals dry up over the past 3-4 seasons. that is the sort of player you dispense with and that is before you look at it from the xg perspective (as done by the chaps at modern fitba at https://www.modernfitba.com/blogs/2018/7/20/dont-listen-to-jim-white-adam-rooney-departs-aberdeen-at-the-right-time ). from the player’s side of the argument, why shouldn’t adam rooney take that drop and take the money while he can? what players in his position would receive that sort of offer at this stage in their careers? a three year deal on that sort of money will give rooney financial security at the back end of his career that no other club would offer him. these hot takes about how scottish football must be awful are predictable and it’s hardly the first time this site has taken the time to write a rebuttal to them but my view on this is about as clear as it can be: it is not the fault of aberdeen or scottish football if other clubs wish to drastically overpay for squad players. now that’s not to say that it’s a good thing that scottish premiership clubs should be out-bid by english non-league clubs but, given salford are bankrolled by a series of multi-millionaires whose individual wealth alone is much higher than many scottish owners and combined is higher than all of them, that they are paying money to blow not just scottish clubs, but english league clubs, out of the water is a unique circumstance. and that some people take umbrage to it is to be expected. stephen robinson noted that salford had out-bid motherwell for players and prompted gary neville to say that managers shouldn’t talk about other clubs like that, almost in complete ignorance that that is what his day job on sky sports to do. neville was similarly tetchy when accrington stanley owner andy holt accused him of trying to “steal” a place in the football league. ultimately, no-one has any control over how gary neville wants to run his little pet project. it might also be worth noting their manager was at the top end of league one last season or that salford have signed players who were playing efl football last season this summer. if he wants to run his club in the manner of an english gretna, then that is his right and, should it all go belly up at some point, it’s everyone else’s right to point and laugh should they so wish. it doesn’t mean anyone can draw any conclusions about another club or anyone else except adam rooney, who has chosen to take the money in exchange for forgoing all right to being considered relevant in scottish football or in the eyes of martin o’neill at international level. what matters more is how aberdeen go about replacing him. stevie may’s form is questionable and sam cosgrove’s quality is the same. but by accepting £150k for a player who was likely not going to be playing much anyway, they have a little more leeway with which to do that and bring in reinforcements. adam rooney travels to salford with the spotlight on him because of the salary he is earning and because of how his new clubs chooses to conduct itself. how that pans out is utterly irrelevant to scottish football in the long-term, the medium-term or the short-term as he was not going to play much part in either of those. that certain journalists choose to extrapolate doom from that says more about them than it does scottish football. certainly, should celtic cash in to the tune to £25m+ for kieran tierney, i doubt we’ll hear anyone furiously tapping out obituaries to scottish football. so why on earth would you write an obituary for scottish football over someone on aberdeen’s bench? are hate-clicks really better than the truth? 1 day ago 3 comments permalink this season, i’ll be attempting to put out english language highlights packages for the slovenian prva liga and (if they are put up on youtube in a timely manner for me to use) the croatian prva liga also. here is the best of the action from the first games of the slovenian season. 2 days ago comments permalink rangers-osijek europa league preview in the second qualifying round of the europa league, the draw has thrown together the third best team in scotland, rangers, against the fourth best team in croatia, osijek. as a scotsman who writes about both scottish and croatian football, it only makes sense to take a proper look at this intriguing tie. 1 - how did both teams get here? rangers defeated macedonia’s shkupi 2-0 over the two legs with two fairly stuttering performances, albeit, performances of the kind you’d expect with a new manager wanting to do things differently. shkupi, over the two legs, offered very little in the way of going forward but steven gerrard was unhappy with his team’s work in possession and with their lack of cutting edge. as for osijek, a 3-2 aggregate win over petrocub of moldova probably doesn’t sound the best form, but it’s probably fair to say that they went into the first leg having had a late night partying after croatia’s win over england in the world cup as their instagram live attested. 2 - how does each team play? rangers, so far under gerrard, have preferred a 4-3-3 type formation with the midfield three being fairly tight and width being offered by the full backs and by windass and murphy either side of morelos. osijek play a fairly similar formation, if only slightly deeper - more a 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1 with the focus being on not just keeping their wingers deep, but then breaking quickly. 3 - what are the strengths and weaknesses of rangers? the obvious starting point is that, unlike osijek, they have a rookie manager and they are implementing a new(ish) style of play. that isn’t by itself a bad thing, but it’s definitely not a good thing as these things take time and take games. the shkupi games may have passed by without any goals conceded, but it’s also fair to say that they weren’t matches where steven gerrard will have learned all that much about his defence as shkupi weren’t good enough to lay a glove on them - osijek will be a far sterner test of how his side are taking to him from a defensive perspective. the second issue for rangers is the form of alfredo morelos. with lalo herrera going back to mexico on loan, morelos is the only senior striker able to play in the centre of the attacking three - he missed chances against shkupi and i hardly need to remind anyone that he appears to be cursed when playing against celtic. gerrard has a call to make over whether he sticks with him or whether he fin
